Important Month for Telangana

This is a very crucial month for the Telangana issue as the Sri Krishna Commission would deliver its verdict regarding the formation of the separate state to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

If the Commission gives the verdict in favour of the separation then there would be trouble across other parts of the state and if the verdict is against the separation then entire Telangana, including the state capital, Hyderabad would boil.

So, got to keep a close watch on this issue and how the leaders react and act during the crisis.

Somehow, my gut feeling is that Telangana would be formed !! God Willing !!

Jai Telangana !!

Samaikya Andhra Politicians Provocation

In a bid to provoke and create political unrest and law and order problem, the Samaikya Andhra (United Andhra) Joint Action Committee had decided to conduct a meeting at Hyderabad on 7th February.

Looks like their main agenda is to just create trouble in the capital city which is in the heart of Telangana.

Government should not allow such acts by irresponsible politicians whose main agenda seems to be creating trouble rather than gain anything good for the common man.

People of Telangana will not allow anyone use the land of Telangana against Telanganites.

Meeting on Telangana - Sheer Waste of Time

When all the political parties have virtually split into two halves, one representing Andhra State and another representing Telangana State, I was wondering what would be the outcome of the meeting that is taking place while Iam writing this post in New Delhi.

Home Minister, P Chidambaram had called for a all party meeting representing all the regions of the state. All the parties including Congress, Telugu Desam Party & Praja Rajyam Party have virtually split along regional lines. Parties like Bharatiya Janata Party,Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Communist Party of India have already made known their stance since many years for a separate Telangana State. So, there is no split in these parties.

All the leaders of all the regions have already made their stance clear and they said they would not budge. So, what is this meeting going to decide ??
If it decides for the creation of Telangana state then Andhra region would again erupt in violence and conversely if the meeting decides against Telangana, entire Telangana would erupt in flames, including the capital city, Hyderabad which is in the heart of Telangana.

The meeting started at 10:30 AM today (an hour back) on January 5th 2010 at North Block (Home Minister Office) in New Delhi. Leaders from 8 political parties were invited for this meeting.

Congress Party: Uttam Kumar Reddy representing Telangana and Kavuri Sambasiva Rao representing Andhra.

Telugu Desam party: R Prakash Reddy representing Telangana and Y Ramakrishnudu representing Andhra.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi: K Chandra Sekhar Rao and Professor Jaya Shankar, both representing Telangana.

Bharatiya Janata Party: Bandaru Dattatreya representing Telangana and hari Babu representing Andhra.

Praja Rajyam Party: Chiranjeevi and C.Ramachandrayya, both representing Andhra.

Communist Party of India(Marxist): J Ranga Reddy and BV Raghavulu, both representing Andhra.

Communist Party of India: K Narayana, Gunda Mallesh both representing Telangana.

Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen: Assaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi who are playing the neutral card even though they are from Telangana.

AP Assembly pushes Telangana Issue to ext year

Here is an article regarding the Telangana Issue where politicians from outside Telangana are planning to create trouble. It mentions that hundreds of Goondas (hired assassins) from Andhra (by Lagadapati Rajgopal, the MP from Vijayawada) and Factionists from Raayalaseema (by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, MP from Kadapa)were brought to Hyderabad to create trouble. Here is the Original article that appeared on MSN: House pushes T-issue to next year, fear in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was adjourned sine die following pandemonium soon after it began for the day's proceedings on Monday amidst slogan shouting by MLAs in favour of unified Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This means that the resolution on Telangana will get further delayed and can be tabled only in the next session sometime in January end or early February next year.

Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy adjourned the House sine die after legislative affairs minister D Prasada Rao moved a motion Under Rule 16 of the Assembly Rules in that regard amidst pandemonium.

The Assembly was originally scheduled to hold the winter session till December 23.

However, with more than 130 MLAs of Andhra and Raalayasemma Region submitting their resignations and with the remaining members disrupting the proceedings, government chose to bring the sessions to an end.

The winter session which began on December 7 had not transacted any business in the five days it sat except for passing a condolence resolution in memory of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.

Prasada Rao said conducting proceedings in the House was not possible in a surcharged atmosphere and at a time when majority of MLAs have submitted their resignation.

Meanwhile, with reports that goondas and anti-social elements from Andhra and Raayalaseema regions have been hired to create trouble in Hyderabad, the city opened the week with a sense of fear psychosis. A worried Congress government took hundreds of suspects into preventive custody on Sunday and Monday.

Supporters of Telangana too have stepped up pressure saying that they will not tolerate any trouble or protests in Hyderabad. The police have set up roadblocks on way to Hyderabad as anti-Telangana protests, sweeping Coastal Andhra and Raayalaseema, headed for the state capital on Monday.

Both Raayalaseema and parts of Coastal Andhra are known to have well-oiled gangs that could be hired to foment trouble at a short notice.

The TRS has warned it would retaliate if protesters from Andhra and Raayalaseema hold programmes in Hyderabad on Monday. Harish Rao, TRS MLA from Siddipet, said TRS leaders would mobilise their cadres to counter the anti-Telangana protests.

Early Monday morning, Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal was arrested at the airport in Hyderabad soon after he landed to launch an indefinite fast to oppose the proposed division of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

Tension prevailed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad on the city outskirts as Rajagopal's supporters tried to resist the arrest.

Police have taken Rajagopal to an undisclosed location in view of threats by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), student bodies and Congress leaders from Telangana region to stop him from launching any protest in Hyderabad.

The industrialist, whose Lanco Group of companies has huge business interests in Hyderabad, is against the central government's decision to give separate statehood to Telangana region, which comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad.

As tension was mounting in the city following TRS' allegations that Rajagopal was bringing hired goons from Vijayawada to create trouble in Hyderabad, police Sunday night raided several hotels and lodges in the city and arrested several supporters of the MP.

Under state orders to stop protesters from entering the city, police put up barriers on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway 9 to stop supporters of Rajgopal from heading towards Hyderabad. Rajagopal has been denied police permission to start a fast unto-death from Monday in the city.

The police action added to the fury in Coastal Andhra.

Vijayawada mayor Ratna Bindu and former mayor Mallika Begum, who were arrested, alleged that the "Telangana lobby" was behind the government action.

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), which had so far been silent, declared that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) should withdraw its slogan "Telanganawale jaago, Andhrawale bhago". Assaduddin Owaisi, MIM MP from Hyderabad, said the slogan was creating "a fear psychosis" among people living in Hyderabad.

Several ministers, meanwhile, urged Chief Minister Rosaiah to introduce a resolution for a separate Telangana in the Assembly on Monday.

But the Assembly had to be adjourned as pandemonium prevailed.

On Sunday, Coastal and Raayalaseema districts dug in their heels. Several people have gone on fast-unto death, similar to what TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao had undertaken. Two railway stations in Anantapur district were torched and students in hundreds staged protest rallies. Normal life is expected to be affected in Andhra and Raayalaseema where several groups have called or a two-day bandh.

Leaders of political parties rushed to Rosaiah urging him to take steps before he situation takes a turn for the worse. Devineni Uma Maheshwara Rao and Chinnam Kotaiah, TDP MLAs from Mylavaram and Nuzvid in Krishna district, former Viayawada mayor B Anuradha, 20 students and 70 women in Kurnool town sat on a fast-unto-death.

Meanwhile, ministers who had threatened to resign have quietly backtracked and left Rosaiah alone. Telangana ministers, who made similar threats, also took a break.

Sources said it had become known to the Congress central leadership that there were other reasons for the resignation threats by ministers from Coastal Andhra and Raayalaseema. Rosaiah said the party high command had been apprised of the situation and would do the needful.

Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) Chiranjeevi was among those who met Rosaiah and urged him to take immediate steps to prevent the law and order situation in Andhra and Raayalaseema regions from deteriorating.

"Many people have started hunger strikes in Coastal and Raayalaseema areas. I urged the CM to take steps to ensure that law and order situation remains normal," he said.

Andhra and Raayalaseema regions of the state are witnessing protests for the last four days against the government's decision to initiate the process for granting separate statehood to Telangana.

Government Wasting Time to take a decision on Telangana

Yesterday (7th December), Andhra Pradesh Government suddenly called for an All Party Meeting late in the night to discuss regarding separate Telangana state. All the parties have conveyed what they have been saying in the Press.

Political parties including Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)and Communist Party of India (CPI) have expressed that they would support any Bill that the Government puts forward in the Assembly regarding splitting of the state. These parties have made their stance clear since many months.

But the Government only said that it will take a decision only on Party High command's directive. People of Telangana were expecting something concrete out of this hurriedly arranged meeting and the Government only said that it is helpless. If the Government says it cant take a decision and only it's party high command which sits in New Delhi can take a decision, then what is the purpose of its functioning ??

It would be better that the Chief Minister, Mr.K.Rosaiah tenders his resignation and let's his party high command rule. It is a shame that the hope and aspirations of 4 crore Telangana people lie at the mercy of Congress Party Chief, Sonia Gandhi who hardly knows the ground situation.

Maybe it is time that we don't vote to such parties where the decision making power will not be with the state's Chief Minister but with their party high command.

History of Telangana

The issue of a separate statehood for the Telangana region in the state of Andhra Pradesh has suddenly arisen from the ashes with the fast onto death "satyagraha" by the President of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Mr. K Chandra Sekhar Rao (popularly known as KCR) reaching 9th day today.

His Son, K.Taraka Rama Rao (named after our famous former Chief Minister, N T Rama Rao) says that his father's health is critical but stable.

Why had KCR suddenly started the indefinite fast onto death ?

Till now, the only person who was against the formation of Telangana state was our former chief minister, Mr.Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy. He recently died in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala forest. With the elimination of YSR, the chances of getting a separate state has increased. This is one main reason why KCR had started the fast.

From the beginning, YSR was against Telangana as he felt that his powers would be limited only to a very small area of the state. He would lose his bargaining power in the Congress Party.
He cultivated a group of Telangana legislators in his own party who are against the formation of Telangana for their own personal reasons. He used these legislators in fighting against those who were strongly supporting Telangana in his party.
Congress had fought elections in alliance with TRS on several occasions and even going to the extent of supporting a separate state in their manifesto. But Congress ditched TRS and also the people of Telangana and never took the issue forward.

How many districts are there in Telangana ?

Here is a list of the districts that form Telangana:
* Adilabad
* Nizamabad
* Karimnagar
* Warangal
* Khammam
* Medak
* Hyderabad
* Ranga Reddy
* Nalgonda
* Mahaboobnagar

Hyderabad City is completely surrounded by the Ranga Reddy District and the nearest border to Andhra is around 150 Kilometers away.

How many districts are there in Andhra?

Here is a list of the districts that form Andhra:

* Srikakulam
* Vizianagaram
* Vishakhapatnam
* East Godavari
* West Godavari
* Krishna
* Guntur
* Prakasam
* Nellore

How many districts are there in Raayalaseema?

Here is a list of the districts that form Raayalaseema:

* Kurnool
* Ananthapur
* Kadapa
* Chittoor

Entire Andhra Pradesh is as big as England and all the three regions of of the state namely, Telangana, Andhra and Raayalaseema are backward. It is more than 50 years since Andhra State and Hyderabad State were merged to form Andhra Pradesh and all the three regions are backward. Is the merger worth ??

Is it not better if we split to out original areas and see how we can develop all the three regions ? The experimentation of a combined state flopped and why not try another experiment by splitting up ??

Formation of Andhra State:

The great Gandhian, Amarajeevi Potti Sri Ramulu went on a fast onto death in Madras(presently Chennai) demanding a separate state for Telugus to be carved out of Madras State where Tamil is spoken.

In an effort to unify the Telugu people, and preserve the unique culture of Telugu people, he attempted to force the government to listen to public demands for the unification of Andhra based on linguistic lines. He went on a lengthy fast, and only stopped when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru promised to support unification.

However, there was no movement on the issue for a long time. He started fasting again for attaining statehood for Andhra in Maharshi Bulusu Sambamurthy’s house in Madras on 19 October 1952. It started off without fanfare but steadily caught people’s imagination despite the disavowal of the fast by the Andhra Congress committee.

The government of the day however did not make a clear statement about the formation of a new state despite several strikes and demonstrations by Telugu people. On the midnight of 15 December (i.e. early 16 December 1952), Potti Sreeramulu died and laid down his life trying to achieve his objective.

In his death procession, people shouted slogans praising his sacrifice. When the procession reached Mount Road, thousands of people joined and raised slogans hailing Sriramulu. Later, they went into a frenzy and resorted to destruction of public property.

The news spread like wildfire and created an uproar among the people in far off places like Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Guntur, Tenali, Ongole and Nellore. Seven people were killed in police firing in Anakapalle and Vijayawada. The popular agitation continued for three to four days disrupting normal life in Madras and Andhra regions. On 19 December, the Prime minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru made an announcement about formation of a separate state.

On 1 October 1953, the state of Andhra was established with Kurnool as capital carving it out from Madras State. However, the Telangana region existed prior as a separate state before merging with Andhra state. On November 1, 1956, Telangana was merged with Andhra and as a result Andhra Pradesh was formed with Hyderabad as its capital, against the States Reorganization Commission Report (SRC).

Kerala and Karnataka states were formed the same day in 1956, followed by Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960. The formation of linguistic states is the single most important event in the history of South Indian languages, as it provided an opportunity for these languages to develop independently, each of them having a state to support.

While Sri Potti Sriramulu has done a great sacrifice to achieve Andhra state from Madras Presidency, its noteworthy for the readers to understand that at that time, Telangana existed as a separate state and his efforts were mislead to the layman's understanding that he sacrificed his life for the formation of the present Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh is formed based on linguistic base and that is when Hyderabad State (Burgula Ramakrisha Rao, Chief Minister for Hyderabad State from 17 September 1948 till merged in Andhra Pradesh) is merged.

Potti Sriramulu fasted in the heart of Madras (Chennai) city for over 58 days for an Andhra state with Madras as the capital. He described "Andhra without Madras as a dead body without a head. The reasons as to why the Rajaji government, Union government led by Nehru or police did not intervene to force feed or shift him to a hospital remain unclear.

History of Telangana:

The meaning of Telangana literally means "Land of Telugus". The Telugu language originated in Telangana.

Telangana region was mentioned in the Mahabharata as the Telinga Kingdom which said to be inhabited by the tribe known as Telavana and said to have fought on the Pandava side in the great war of Mahabharata. It is also evident from the fact that there is Pandavula Guhalu in warangal district(wherein Pandavas spent their life in exile (Lakkha Gruham)).

And, in Treta yuga, it is believed that Lord Sri Rama along with his consort Sita Devi and brother Lakshmana, spent their life in exile at Parnashala on the banks of Godavari river which is about 25 km from Bhadrachalam in Khammam District of Telangana.

India became independent from the British Empire in 1947. The Nizam of Hyderabad wanted to retain his independence, but the Indian Government amalgamated his state of Hyderabad by force on September 17, 1948 after the successful execution of Operation Polo by the Indian Army. When India became independent, the Telugu-speaking people (although Urdu is spoken in some parts of Telangana districts) were distributed in about 22 districts; 9 of them in the Telangana region of Nizam's Dominions (Hyderabad State), 12 in the Madras Presidency and one in French-controlled Yanam.

Social conditions then immediately after independence were drastically opposite in Telangana and the Costal andhra districts and to a some extent, when compared to Rayalaseema.

Being under Tyrannical,feudalistic,oppressive and religiously discriminative regime and years long of brutal oppression and cultural abuses by the Nizam and also due to constant fighting in the latter years of the Nizam rule, education, awareness and lingo(accent in some parts, especially Hyderabad) to an extent were seriously effected.Only after Telangana's Liberation, people felt they were safe after years living as second grade citizens under Nizam.

Where as in Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema being under British rule enjoyed freedom to some extent than the Telangana people.They were educated and were generally more aware of whatsoever in the society.Under the British, they benefited by the development which the British had done to the region by laying roads , promoting education by the universities and colleges, reservoirs like Cotton Barrage, Prakasam Barrage and also are the language and cultural development by the likes of Charles Philip Brown, Campbell, Galletti, and reformers like Veereshalingam Panthulu etc.

They enjoyed religious freedom and cultural freedom except political freedom. The poor Telangana Telugus suffered a lot from cultural, linguistic and religious and political freedom, where Urdu was taught forcefully at schools( though they are very few schools as such), Islam was the state religion and Muslims were considered as masters over the other religions, religious freedom was almost nil, worst form of feudalism being prominent in Nizam state and literally no efforts in social and cultural reformation as in Rest of India.

Under these antipathetic and violent conditions ,the people were defensive and were Ignorant when compared to the outside world. ( Though after Operation Polo, Muslims of Nizam state suffered violent backlash of religious violence when many of the innocent Muslim families were killed or went missing. Most of the events took place in Marathi speaking areas and in a couple of Kannada speaking areas of the Nizam rule. In the Marathi speaking areas the revolt was led by AryaSamaj, a Hindu reformist organization. In Telangana, this was led by Communists and so didn't witness such violent backlash.)

Meanwhile Telugu speaking areas were carved out of erstwhile Madras state by popular agitation by the then leaders like Potti Sri Ramulu etc.

Merger of Telangana and Andhra

In December 1953, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru appointed the States Reorganization Commission to prepare for the creation of states on linguistic lines. This was headed by Justice Fazal Ali and the commission itself was also known as the Fazal Ali Commission. The efforts of this commission was overseen by Govind Ballabh Pant, who served as Home Minister from December 1954. The commission created a report in 1955 recommending the reorganization of India's states.

The States Reorganization Commission (SRC) was not in favour of merging the Telangana region with the then Andhra state. Para 382 of States Reorganization Commission Report (SRC) said "..opinion in Andhra is overwhelmingly in favour of the larger unit, public opinion in Telangana has still to crystallize itself. Important leaders of public opinion in Andhra themselves seem to appreciate that the unification of Telangana with Andhra, though desirable, should be based on a voluntary and willing association of the people and that it is primarily for the people of Telangana to take a decision about their future...".

The concerns of Telanganas were manifold. The region had a less developed economy than Andhra, but with a larger revenue base (mostly because it taxed rather than prohibited alcoholic beverages), which Telanganas feared might be diverted for use in Andhra. They also feared that planned dam projects on the Krishna and Godavari rivers would not benefit Telangana proportionately even though Telanganas controlled the headwaters of the rivers. Telanganas feared too that the people of Andhra would have the advantage in jobs, particularly in government and education.

Para 386 of States Reorganization Commission Report (SRC) said "After taking all these factors into consideration we have come to the conclusions that it will be in the interests of Andhra as well as Telangana area is to constitute into a separate State, which may be known as the Hyderabad State with provision for its unification with Andhra after the general elections likely to be held in or about 1961 if by a two thirds majority the legislature of the residency Hyderabad State expresses itself in favor of such unification."

However, the Congress party was strong in Andhra than in Telangana because the Nizam who ruled till then did not allow Congress activities in Telangana. The strong Congress lobby in Andhra lobbied with central congress leadership for the merger. So, the central government decided to ignore the SRC recommendations and established unified Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956. However, a "Gentleman's agreement" provided reassurances to the Telangana people as well to Andhra people in terms of power sharing as well as administrative domicile rules and distribution of expenses of various regions.

At the time of merging parts of Hyderabad State, with Andhra, and forming Andhra Pradesh state, Hyderabad State had an excess revenue due to alcohol excise duty, and The Indian government confiscated enormous wealth accumulated by Nizams provided the resources in creation of larger state.

Separate Telangana state movement:

In the following years after the formation of Andhra Pradesh state, however, the Telangana people had a number of complaints about how the agreements and guarantees were implemented. Discontent with the 1956 Gentleman's agreement intensified in January 1969 when the guarantees that had been agreed on were supposed to lapse.

Student agitation for the continuation of the agreement began at Osmania University in Hyderabad and spread to other parts of the region. Government employees and opposition members of the state legislative assembly swiftly threatened "direct action" in support of the students. This movement, also known as Jai Telangana movement, led to widespread violence and deaths of hundreds of people and students of this Telangana region. Approximately 360 students gave their lives in this movement.

Although the Congress faced dissension within its ranks, its leadership stood against additional linguistic states, which were regarded as "anti-national." As a result, defectors from the Congress, led by M. Chenna Reddy, founded the Telangana People's Association (Telangana Praja Samithi). Despite electoral successes, however, some of the new party leaders gave up their agitation in September 1971 and, much to the disgust of many separatists, rejoined the safer political haven of the Congress ranks.

Geography, Culture & Identity of Telangana:

Of the three regions of the state, Telangana has the largest area, with 1,14,800 km2.The Telangana plateau is composed of Archean Gneissic rocks and drained by Godavari and Krishna rivers. The entire region is divided into two main regions namely ghats and peneplains. The surface is dotted with low depressions.

Centuries of independent existence has given Telangana its own distinctive culture and identity. The Telugu language spoken here has evolved into a new dialect with a liberal mixture of words from Urdu. Festivals: Eid al-Adha (Bakr Eid), Dassera, Eid-ul-Fitr and Ugadi are prominent festivals in Telangana. The region celebrates distinctive festivals like Bathukamma, and Bonalu. The other festivals, such as, Deepawali, Holi, Moharram and Vinayaka chaturthi are also celebrated with equal enthusiasm as in northern India. The national festival Sankranti is also celebrated in the beginning of harvest season on 14 January every year.

Note: Please find the recommendations of the SRC in Image formats on the right. This proves that despite opposition from Telangana people, Hyderabad State (Telangana) is forcefully merged along with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.

BJP to Raise Telangana Issue In Parliament

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Prakash Javadekar and Pushpdan Gadhavi have bagged time to push for the creation of Telangana -- in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha respectively -- during the fortnight-long Parliament session beginning on Thursday.

Javadekar is a Member of Parliament from Maharashtra and Gadhavi from Gujarat.

Javadekar, whose resolution is listed for February 20, told reporters that he was only pursuing his party's line to fight for Telangana. It will also figure in the BJP's manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, he affirmed.

When media persons pointed out that the BJP had not made any efforts to create Telangana during the five-year tenure of the National Democratic Alliance, Javadekar quipped that the 1999 party manifesto had promised the creation of three states, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, and the party had kept its promise.

Looks like BJP is the only party that is serious on getting a separate state of Telangana.

Congress Ditching Telangana

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy is trying the show off that he is a Master strategist. During the previous assembly elections, he had an understanding with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and fought the elections and won the elections. One of the agendas is creation of a separate Telangana - albeit through a second State Re-Organization Committee.(SRC)

Second SRC never came nor any commitment for a separate state. Looks like those who are in power never want to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. The earlier Telugu Desam Party(TDP) refused the separation point blank and now the same party has ditched its stance and supports a separate state.

Important Political Parties For Telangana:

* Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
* Communist Party of India (CPI)
* Telugu Desam Party (TDP)
* Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS)
* Nava Telangana Praja Party - belonging to Devender Goud who split from TDP

Important Political Parties Against Telangana:

* Congress Party
* Communist Party of India (Marxists)
* Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM)

Important Political Parties Who are Neutral or not yet taken a decision:

* Loksatta Party
* Praja Rajyam - belongs to the film actor, Chiranjeevi

Each party has its own stance on the Telangana issue. BJP was the first political party to take a right decision regarding the separation while others jumped into the fray due to other political reasons.

Two days back, the Chief Minister went to New Delhi for a Congress core committee meeting on Telangana issue. He informed the party chief, Sonia Gandhi that Congress is on a strong footing on Telangana. Looks like YSR is day dreaming. The day he says that he is against Telangana, Congress would be routed in entire Telangana region where TDP and TRS have a good following.

YSR is taking the party high command for a ride and he is going to drown the party along with him. When he was in a meeting, he ensured that all the Muslim MP's, MLA's and MLC's from Congress campaign against Telangana.

There is lot of similarity between YSR and Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Jinnah fought for a separate Pakistan saying that Muslims would never be safe in Hindu India. Now, YSR is projecting the same.

Will TRS & NTPP Merge With TDP ??

The idea of a merger between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and Nava Telangana Praja Party (NTPP) came to me today morning after going through the news reports that TDP is going to formally give support to a separate Telangana State while some of its Telangana based leaders went to the extent of starting off a agitation for the separation.

Till now, there were two major political parties in Andhra Pradesh - The Congress Party and Telugu Desam Party. Now, a whole bunch of parties have sprung up giving a nightmare to the voter in choosing a proper political platform to vent his anger. The major parties in Andhra Pradesh now are:

* Congress Party
* Telugu Desam Party
* Telangana Rashtra Samithi - Only in Telangana Areas
* Praja Rajyam Party
* Nava Telangana Praja Party - Only in Telangana Areas
* Communist Party of India (Marxists) - CPI(M)
* Communist Party of India - CPI
* Bharatiya Janata Party
* Loksatta Party

and a host of smaller and marginal political parties which are mostly based on caste equations.

The Congress Party is going to contest on its own now as the Communist Party of India (Marxists) had withdrawn its support.

The Telugu Desam Party is scouting for alliances and looks like it is going to get support from CPI(M). It is heard that TDP is also in talks with TRS. Once TDP comes out with a clear policy on separate Telangana, TRS should have no problem supporting TDP. Devender Goud recently came out of TDP to form Nava Telangana Praja Party (NTPP). If TDP supports Telangana state, NTPP "might" consider supporting TDP. After all, TRS and NTPP was carved out of TDP. If all the three merge, it would be sort of a re-union.

Mega Star Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam categorically said that they are out of a grand alliance to bring down the Congress Government. They are keeping their options closed to their hearts. They still have to come out with clear policies on lot of issues and the most problematic one is their stance on separate Telangana State. They said they would come out with a decision after a while. It is heard they are talking with non-congress and non-TDP political parties.

The Communists in Andhra Pradesh are always jumping alliances. They are the most opportunist political party here. Till now, they were supporting the Congress. They withdrew the support once the Congress went ahead with a Nuclear Deal with the US.

The Loksatta Party is formed by a former IAS Officer, Jayaprakash Narayan, who wants to clean out the scum from politics. Not sure how many would support this party. I voted them during the by-elections to Khairatabad Assembly Constituency a few months back. They lost to the Congress.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is hardly visible in the state. With 42 Lok Sabha Seats from Andhra Pradesh, AP plays a very key role in making and breaking Governments in the Center. The BJP is keep to form next Government in the Center but with not a single seat from AP in it's kitty, it would be very difficult for them to form a Government. The party in AP is in shambles with too many leaders who have no issues to fight for. It is in a moribund state now. It got to be revived with good and clean leaders like Himayatnagar MLA, Kishan Reddy.

Stubborn Politicians

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Supremo, Nara Chandrababu Naidu is taking a tour of the entire state naming his tour as "Mee Kosam" (For You) and trying to connect with ordinary citizens of the state - which he had not done during his 9 years of rule. During his rule as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, he concentrated more on the cities and completely ignored the plight of farmers thus facing a wrath of villagers and losing power to the Congress Party.

Presently, he is touring Vizianagaram District and yesterday, a small village, Devupalli was the stage for the Supreme Polit Bureau Meeting of TDP. Generally, the high level meeting takes place at its head quarters in Hyderabad. The urgency of the meeting was due to various statements by the members of polit bureau on the issue of separate Telangana State. While Devender Goud, who belongs to Telangana wants the party to issue a statement supporting the separate state, other members like Yenamala Ramakrishnudu, Yerram Naidu (belonging to Andhra Region) and K.E.Krishna Murthy (belonging to Raayalaseema Region) vehemently opposing the separation.

The meeting was held in a luxurious bus that Naidu is using for his "Yatra". While the formation of separate is gaining momentum and almost all the political parties are supporting it, TDP and CPI(M) are the only two political parties who are not able to tap the sentiments of Telangana people.

While Naidu, in a press conference after the meeting agreed that "Telangana sentiment is there in people", he once again repeated his regular quote that "TDP will take a decision after due deliberation and right decision at right time".

I think right time is running out as the next general elections are just 6 months away. It is time politicians shelve their stubbornness and take the sentiments of people seriously.

Require Good Leaders For Telangana

On Sunday, I went to a house warming ceremony of a relative here in Hyderabad and I was chitchatting with some of my relatives and naturally, the discussion moved to the issue of separate Telangana state. Most of my relatives present there have moved to Hyderabad from Andhra after their adulthood and they still have that penchant for a single state even though they sold off their lands there and settled down here for good.

Initially, I could able to justify separate Telangana to be carved our of Andhra Pradesh. But, when the topic moved towards the leaders, I became defensive and in the end had to admit defeat. Defeat not for separate state but who are the leaders who have the will and who can strive for the economic development of Telangana.

Of all the list of leaders who are in the picture right now, none of them are eligible enough to lead Telangana. If one person has started the separate movement because he was not made Deputy Chief Minister, other person is into this only to try to prove a point and get himself as "President" of India while other person is trying to become Governor of a State and the list continues. None of them are here for the development of the state. They are here only to cash in the sentiments of Telangana people.

Then I started looking at political parties on a whole. While the TRS, BJP and CPI are staunch pro-Telangana parties, Congress Party is in a "fighting mode" among its leaders while TDP and CPI(M) are completely against a separate state. TDP is saying that they will take "right decision at right time".

Then I started narrowing on each party. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) was formed when its leader K. Chandra Sehkar Rao (KCR) was denied the post of Deputy Chief Minister by Chandrababu Naidu Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Government. Some opportunistic leaders from other parties jumped into TRS. TRS leader, Narendra (he has a RSS background and he jumped from BJP into TRS) started a militant wing thus scaring people on region wise. KCR distanced himself from this as he saw some hidden Hindu agenda and he is not ready to sacrifice important Muslim votes as almost 30% of Telangana is Muslim. Narendra broke away from this party and started a separate party. Latest update is that he is trying backhand to make a comeback to his parent party, the BJP. People consider TRS as more militant and violent since its inception. TRS leaders are said to be open boozers which doesnt give a good name to the party.

BJP is the first national party which supported separate Telangana in their National Executive Meeting held at Kakinada (Coastal Andhra Pradesh) couple of years back. All their leaders are unanimous on the separation and they did their ground work really well. Their problem is they have only one legislature representing them in the 292 strong AP Assembly and they need to work hard in that direction. This party looks to have a better opportunity than other parties. Their parent, Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) is pretty strong in Telangana. If they want to push Telangana, then they need to start conducting meetings and awareness campaigns to keep the momentum till the assembly elections slated next year.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) is only strong in couple of pockets in Andhra Pradesh and it cannot play a very important role in pushing for Telangana.

The less said about Congress Party is the better. Recently, Telangana political heavy weights went to New Delhi for an audience with Sonia Gandhi (Congress Party President). She kept them waiting for a whole week inspite of the fact that some of the leaders worked with Congress since the days of Nehru and Indira Gandhi. They had to come back to Hyderabad fuming (??). After lot of pestering, she allowed them audience last week and reports said that she gave a class to them and told them to stop bickering and talking about Telangana as it would give a negative impact on the prospects of Congress in the next elections. These so called leaders have now started fighting among themselves.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo, Nara Chandrababu Naidu rules it with an iron hand and doesnot let anyone to be second in command. There is no second rung leadership in the party and he never allowed dissidence in the party. While he balks about Democracy outside, he never let it happen inside his own party. Devender Goud, the TDP leader from Telangana had recently started to talk about Telangana. He is one of the most senior leaders of TDP. He was severely criticized by leaders from Andhra and Raayalaseema regions and even Naidu took a class of him. Internal democracy is completely put down in TDP and one day, it would only explode.

The Communist Party of India (Marxists) are against smaller states. They worry that if they support small states, someday, they have to give away Gorkhaland - part of West Bengal state which is ruled by the communists with an iron hand past couple of decades. They are not ready to give away their strong hold.

Before we expect a separate state, we need a good Leader to Lead us. The leader has to come out with a plan of action after achieving Telangana. Achieving Telangana is not a difficult task. What lay ahead is how to make sure it survives and beat the critics claims that separate Telaganites would eat rocks from the Deccan Plateau.

Till then, asking for Telangana (leave alone demanding) looks to be like shooting ourselves in the foot.

Telangana - Now Is The Right Time

Looking at the sudden increase in the interest of the political parties, I was wondering when are we going to get a separate Telangana State carved out of Andhra Pradesh State, which is as big as England.
I kept wondering the reason for a state as big as England and all the three parts (Andhra, Raayalaseema and Telangana) claiming to be backward.
We have stayed together almost 60 years and all the three parts of the state are poor. So, what is the need to be together when everyone is not happy.
Best way is to separate - peacefully.

Why are the politicians from the other parts of the state not ready for a split ?? They are afraid that their area of importance is going to decrease and their bargaining power would take a beating with the central government regarding the Central Government funds.

Some Facts regarding Telangana:

The area of Telengana is 1,14,800 Sq Kms.
Telangana represents 42% of the total area of the state and is home to 40% of its total population.

Telangana comprises 10 districts of AP:
Adilabad
Hyderabad
Karimnagar
Khammam
Medak
Mehboobnagar
Nalgonda
Nizamabad
Ranga Reddy
Warangal

History of Telangana:

Telangana region has been ruled by many great dynasties like Sathavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Mughals, and the Qutubshahis. As the Mughal Empire began to disintegrate in the early 18th century, the Muslim Asafjahi dynasty established a separate state known as Hyderabad. Later Hyderabad entered into a treaty of subsidiary alliance with the British Empire, and was the largest and most populous princely state in India. Telangana never under direct British rule, unlike Coastal Andhra and Raayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh, which were part of British India's Madras Presidency.

Andhra Pradesh consists of three distinct regions, namely, Andhra, Raayalaseema and Telangana. Andhra and Raayalaseema were part of Madras province of the British empire. For approximately 400 years, Telangana was part of Hyderabad State, an independent kingdom ruled by Muslim Qutub Shahi and Asafjahi (Nizam) dynasties.

Hyderabad state has parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra in it - until they are merged with those states.
Remaining part of Hyderabad state is merged with Andhra State, thus forming Andhra Pradesh in 1956.
The slang of Telugu spoken in Telangana is very different from the rest of the state.
Telangana Telugu is a mixture of Telugu and Urdu.
The culture and traditions of Telangana are quite different from that of the rest of the state.

The Nizam was the world's wealthiest person during the time of independence.
Lot of Hindus are forcefully converted into Islam with a sword at their neck and Urdu was made official language.
During the time of Independence from British, thousands of Hindus were massacred by their Muslim rulers, thus forcing the Indian Army to perform a "Police Action" on the Nizam forces and liberate Hyderabad.

Merger of Andhra and Telangana Regions:

The States Reorganization Commission (SRC) set up by the government of India in early 50s to examine the question of reorganization of states of the country was, in fact, not in favour of merging the Telangana region with the then Andhra state. Para 382 of States Reorganization Commission (SRC) said "..opinion in Andhra is overwhelmingly in favour of the larger unit, public opinion in Telangana has still to crystallize itself". The concerns of Telanganas were manifold. The region had a less developed economy than Andhra, but a larger revenue base (mostly because it taxed rather than prohibited alcoholic beverages), which Telanganas feared might be diverted for use in Andhra. They also feared that planned dam projects on the Krishna and Godavari rivers would not benefit Telangana proportionately even though Telanganas controlled the headwaters of the rivers. Telanganas feared too that the people of Andhra would have the advantage in jobs, particularly in government and education. Para 386 of States Reorganization Commission (SRC) said "After taking all these factors into consideration we have come to the conclusions that it will be in the interests of Andhra as well as Telangana area is to constitute into a separate State, which may be known as the Hyderabad State with provision for its unification with Andhra after the general elections likely to be held in or about 1961 if by a two thirds majority the legislature of the residency Hyderabad State expresses itself in favor of such unification."

The central government decided to ignore the SRC recommendations and established unified Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956. However, a "Gentlemen's agreement" provided reassurances to the Telangana people.

Grudges of Telanganas:

* Telangana is less developed compared to Andhra.
* Rivers like Krishna and Godavari flow through Telangana, but the water from the dams are sent to Andhra.
* Because of less literacy and backwardness of Telangana people, most of the new jobs, postings in government and education are given to people from Andhra.
* Except for common language, the people of Andhra and Telangana have different dialects, histories, cultural systems, different food habits

Separate Telangana Movement:

In the following years after the formation of Andhra Pradesh state, however, the Telangana people had a number of complaints about how the agreements and guarantees were implemented. Discontent with the 1956 Gentlemen's agreement intensified in January 1969 when the guarantees that had been agreed on were supposed to lapse. Student agitation for the continuation of the agreement began at Osmania University in Hyderabad and spread to other parts of the region. Government employees and opposition members of the state legislative assembly swiftly threatened "direct action" in support of the students. This movement also know as Jai Telangana movement led to widespread violence and deaths of hundreds of people and students of this Telangana region. Approx. 360 students gave their lives in this movement.

Although the Congress faced dissension within its ranks, its leadership stood against additional linguistic states, which were regarded as "anti-national." As a result, defectors from the Congress, led by M.Chenna Reddy, founded the Telangana People's Association (Telangana Praja Samithi). Despite electoral successes, however, some of the new party leaders gave up their agitation in September 1971 and, much to the disgust of many separatists, rejoined the safer political haven of the Congress ranks.

The emotions and forces generated by the movement were not strong enough, however, for a continuing drive for a separate state until 1990s when Bharatiya Janata Party, promised separate Telangana state if they come to power. But BJP could not create separate Telangana state because of the opposition from its coalition partner, Telugu Desam Party. These developments brought new life into separate Telangana movement by year 2000. Congress party MLA's from Telangana region, supported the separate Telangana state and formed a Telangana Congress Legislators Forum. In another development, a new party called Telangana Rashtra Samithi (or TRS) is formed with single agenda of separate Telangana state, with Hyderabad as its capital.

Present Talk of SRC:

Most of the political parties are now pitching for a separate state but in different ways.
While the Bharatiya Janata Party, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Communist Party of India want outright separate state, other parties like the governing Congress Party wants a State Reorganization Commission (SRC) to be established by the Central Government and then decide on the future of Telangana.
The opposition Telugu Desam Party is not ready for Telangana and they say that they will take a decision at "right time".
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) are also against Telangana for their own reasons.

It is high time politicians respect the aspirations of the people of Telangana. The demand of Telangana was made in 1952 but was considered not feasible and then shelved. In the late 60's, a huge political agitation took place but it was successfully put down by the state government.

Even though the agitation started off with economic problems in the background, now it has become more sentimental in nature.

It would be of everyone's good if we separate peacefully !!

Role Of Andhras in Hyderabad:

The people who are most worried with the formation of Telangana are the Andhras who have migrated to Hyderabad City after it is made capital of Andhra Pradesh.
Taking advantage of the Capital City, they established industries, started educational institutions and were imposing their style of language.
One way, they paved for the development of the city and the other way, they are trying to enforce their traditions on the region.
People who have migrated from Andhra and settled in Telangana are called as "Mulkis".

Benefits Due To Separation:

* Right now the coal is mined and electricity is produced in Telangana but most of it is supplied to Andhra region, while districts of Medak and Adilabad have four hours of electricity during the day during summer. In the new state, these districts will be fed with electricity.
* The rivers of Krishna and Godavari flow through Telangana, and the dams are in Telangana, but the canals carrying the water go to Andhra. In the new state, there would be new canals bringing water to the arid regions of Telangana bringing in prosperity to the farmers and local population.
* Most of the jobs, in government and education, are filled up by people from Andhra. In the new state, these jobs will go the local population.

With the above benefits in mind, it is for the welfare of the country that a separate Telangana state is formed - NOW !
